Natural Diamond Upgrade Program

Your diamond has a story. Your next diamond can be even better.

If you already own a natural diamond, Morin Jewelers buys loose diamonds and diamond jewelry, and that value can help offset the cost of a diamond upgrade — a larger stone, a different shape, better color or clarity, or an entirely new setting.

Trade up for an anniversary, a milestone, or simply because your taste has changed. Whether your stone is loose, set in a ring you have worn for twenty years, or sitting in a piece you inherited and never wear, the first step is the same: bring it in so it can be looked at properly.

Three generations of diamond buyers

Bring In Your Diamond.
Find Out What It Can Become.

We buy loose diamonds and diamond jewelry to help offset the cost of an upgrade. What your particular stone supports depends on the stone — so we look at it first, in person, and tell you plainly.

How it works

Four steps, and the first one is just a visit

There is no application and no obligation. You bring the diamond in, we look at it together, and you leave knowing where you stand.

Diamond rings, a bracelet and loose stones in an open jewelry box on the counter at Morin Jewelers
Loose, set, or inherited — bring it in as it is
  1. Bring in your diamond

Stop by 409 Main Street with the stone, the ring, or the piece you no longer wear. Walk-ins are welcome during store hours, or book an appointment for unhurried time with a jeweler. A grading report or old appraisal helps, but is not required.

  2. We evaluate it in front of you

Robert L. Morin, a Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America, examines the diamond with proper tools: cut, color, clarity, carat weight, proportions and condition. You hear what we are seeing and why it matters, not just a number.

  3. We compare it against what’s available

We put your stone next to natural diamonds from our inventory — including stones sourced through our direct access to the Antwerp diamond exchange — under the same light, so you can see the difference rather than read about it.

  4. You decide, and we build it

If it makes sense to move forward, we pair the new diamond with the right setting: one of our engagement rings, a setting bought on its own, or a custom piece finished at our own bench. Your stone never leaves town to be set.

The questions we get first

Where most people start

Did you buy the diamond somewhere else?

That is fine. We work on and evaluate jewelry regardless of where it was purchased — pieces bought elsewhere and pieces passed down through a family come across our counter every week.

Our gold and diamond buying service purchases loose diamonds and diamond jewelry, and we buy gold jewelry in any condition for a cash payout or in-store credit toward a new piece.

What about the setting you already own?

Sometimes the diamond is fine and it is the setting that has run its course — and sometimes the opposite. You can keep your mounting and have a new stone set into it, provided it can safely hold the diamond you are considering; our bench jeweler will tell you honestly whether it can.

You can also go the other direction: keep the original diamond for a pendant or for a daughter, and set the new one in a design of your own.

How do you know what your diamond is worth?

We evaluate it in person. One distinction worth knowing before you come in: an insurance appraisal establishes replacement value for a policy, which is a different figure from what a diamond represents toward a trade or an upgrade.

People are often surprised by that, so we would rather explain it across the counter than have you read a number online and expect it.

What should you bring with you?

The diamond or the piece itself is the only requirement. A grading report, certificate or previous appraisal helps, but their absence does not stop anything.

If you already have an idea of what you want next, bring a photo — it gives us a concrete starting point, and often saves a second visit.

Worth knowing before you trade

Two diamonds of the same weight can look nothing alike

This is the part most people have never had explained, and it is the part that decides whether a new stone actually feels like a step up.

A well-proportioned diamond, face-up and in profile, spreading wide across the top
Weight you can see Cut to good proportions, the stone spreads wider across the top and returns more light through the table. Wider face-up
A deeply cut diamond of the same weight, face-up and in profile, appearing smaller from above
Weight you can’t Cut too deep, much of the same carat weight sits below the girdle where nobody looking at your hand will ever see it. Smaller face-up

Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Both diamonds above can weigh exactly the same and read identically on a grading report — and still look clearly different on a hand. Shape works this way too: an oval and a round of equal weight present very differently.

Clarity behaves similarly at the top of the scale. Past a certain grade the difference lives on the report rather than in the stone as you wear it. This is why we put both diamonds under the same light in front of you, and why the goal of an upgrade is a stone you like looking at more — not a better number. Read our guide to the 4Cs.

Straight answer

What we can and cannot tell you in advance

We do not publish a fixed trade-in percentage, a minimum purchase, an expiration window or a list of qualifying stones — because a diamond upgrade genuinely depends on the diamond in front of us. Cut, color, clarity, carat weight, proportions, condition and the current market all move the number, and any figure quoted before we have seen the stone would be a guess.

What we can tell you is how the conversation goes: you bring the piece in, our Graduate Gemologist evaluates it while you watch, and you leave knowing where you stand — whether or not you decide to do anything that day. There is no cost and no obligation to have a diamond looked at. Questions first? Call or text (508) 764-7250.

Why bring it here

A century of looking at diamonds on Main Street

The Morin Jewelers storefront at 409 Main Street in Southbridge, Massachusetts
409 Main Street  ·

Oliver Morin opened the store in 1920. His son Robert E. Morin took over in 1957 and built it alongside his wife Lorraine. Today it is run by Robert L. Morin — the third generation at the same address, a Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America, a goldsmith and a bench jeweler currently pursuing his Master Bench Jeweler certification.

Our diamonds come through direct access to the Antwerp, Belgium diamond exchange, where a third-generation jeweler selects them in person rather than buying them off a screen. Setting, sizing, restoration and custom work happen at our own bench in Southbridge instead of being shipped to an outside vendor. And the person who evaluates your diamond is the person who will set your next one.

Common questions

Natural diamond upgrade FAQ

Can I upgrade a natural diamond I purchased somewhere else?

Bring it in and we will look at it. Morin Jewelers regularly works on jewelry purchased elsewhere or passed down through a family, and our gold and diamond buying service purchases loose diamonds and diamond jewelry to help offset the cost of an upgrade.

What your specific stone supports depends on the stone itself, so the next step is an evaluation in the showroom rather than a number over the phone.

Do I need to have purchased my original diamond from Morin Jewelers?

We work on and evaluate jewelry regardless of where it was bought — that applies to repairs, restoration and our diamond buying alike. If you have a natural diamond you would like to put toward something new, bring it in.

Terms for any individual upgrade are discussed in person once we have seen the piece.

Can I upgrade to a larger diamond?

Often, yes — a larger stone is the most common reason people start this conversation. How far the value of your current diamond goes depends on that diamond and on the natural diamonds available when you come in.

Worth knowing: carat weight and visual size are not the same thing. A better-cut stone can look larger and brighter than a heavier one that is cut poorly, which is part of what we walk through during the evaluation.

Can I change the diamond shape?

Yes, shape is entirely open for discussion. Round, oval, emerald, cushion, princess, pear, radiant, marquise, asscher and heart shapes are all part of our natural diamond inventory, and we can source specific shapes through our direct access to the Antwerp diamond exchange.

Keep in mind that changing shape usually means changing the setting as well, since most settings are built for a particular outline.

Can I upgrade the diamond and the setting at the same time?

Yes. You can pair an upgraded diamond with one of our engagement rings, buy a setting on its own, or have something designed from scratch.

Our custom work runs in three stages — consultation and sketch, 3D CAD rendering, then setting and finishing at our own bench in Southbridge — so you see the piece before it is made.

How do I know what my current diamond is worth?

We evaluate it in person. Our Graduate Gemologist assesses diamonds, gemstones and gold with proper tools and explains the characteristics that drive value: cut, color, clarity, carat weight, proportions, condition and any grading report.

An insurance appraisal establishes replacement value for a policy, which is a different figure from what a diamond represents toward a trade or upgrade. We are glad to explain both.

What should I bring with me?

The diamond or the piece itself is the only requirement. If you have a grading report, certificate or a previous appraisal, bring those too — they help, but their absence does not stop anything.

If you already have an idea of what you want next, bring a photo. It gives us a concrete starting point.

Does this program apply to lab grown diamonds?

This page is about upgrading natural, earth-mined diamonds, which is where our Antwerp sourcing and the bulk of these conversations sit. Morin Jewelers does carry a full assortment of lab grown diamonds as well, and you can compare the two side by side in our diamond search or in person.

If you own a lab grown stone and are wondering about your options, call or text (508) 764-7250 and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot do.

Can I finance the difference on an upgrade?

Morin Jewelers offers financing through the Iddeal Credit Card and Affirm, and layaway is also available. Terms, plan lengths and approval are handled through those providers.

See all financing options, including a calculator for estimating a monthly payment before you apply.
